I said ok lets do it and over the last year and a half I've had appointments 2 months apart dealing with all my dental issues. He said "We can do this with appointments months apart so you can afford it and I'll try to do everything as inexpensive as possible because I know you don't have insurance." He also gave me a cash rate. He said we'll deal with your wisdom teeth (i had 2 tops in, 1 impacted and the other was starting in crooked) but we should handle the abscess and the tooth pulling first. The 3rd broken down tooth had an abscess and he prescribed antibiotics for that but said he thought there was a chance that he could use a build up (a type of filling that preps for a crown) on that tooth and save it as long as the infection didn't come back (he would crown it if it held up a year down the road). The one causing me pain with the hole in the middle he said first off we are going to prescribe some painkillers but it most likely would just need a normal filling (albeit a LARGE filling). He told me one tooth no question had to be pulled, it was mostly gone anyhow (the one almost completely broken) and I wasn't shocked at all about that. After that we'll figure out what needs to be done." The dentist then examined me and took xrays (for free), brought them up and started pointing out the problems, what he would do and in what order he would do them and what needed to be done immediately and what could maybe wait a little while.įirst he said lets get you in for a deep cleaning so we can get your gums in good shape because right now they aren't looking good. The first thing the dentist said when he saw me was "We are going to get you out of pain TODAY, so don't worry about that. I said great and got a quick appointment. They said come on in, we'll take a look no charge and we can talk about what we can do to help within your budget. My visit went like this, I called for an appointment, explained I had no insurance but I was in pain and needed dental attention. On top of that I had probably 8 or 9 cavities all over that needed immediate(ish) filling. I hadn't been to the dentist in probably 12-15 years, had one tooth completely decayed and broken up (I think the root was dead, it didn't hurt at all), another where a baby filling had fallen out and now it had a huge growing hole that covers probably 50% of the tooth and exposed the root (nerve) making it very painful and a 3rd that was also broken down pretty bad but had stopped hurting a year ago but had a huge abscess underneath it from an infected root. I was in a similar situation at one time and I'll tell you how my visit went. Most dentists have seen way worse than you can even comprehend so don't worry about them being grossed out or gasping or anything like that.
